Compulsory versus optional cover
Compulsory cover — motor third-party in Hong Kong and Singapore, TNDS in Vietnam, 自賠責 in Japan, 交强险 in China — is required by law and pays only for third-party injury and property damage, up to a cap. Optional cover is what pays for your own vehicle.
What moves the premium most
In rough order: no-claims discount, vehicle value, vehicle age, driver age and experience, the accident rate in your area, then the coverage limits and deductible you choose.
Four ways to pay less
Raise the deductible, build a no-claims discount over consecutive claim-free years, insure at the vehicle's realistic market value rather than its new price, and put multiple vehicles on one policy.
FAQ
How accurate is this?
It is a rough estimate built on each market's published rate structure. Use it to judge magnitude and to compare, never as a substitute for a formal quote.
Why do premiums differ so much between countries?
Compulsory schemes, repair costs, accident rates, legal liability standards and whether the premium is charged as a percentage of vehicle value all differ, so absolute figures are not directly comparable.
How does the no-claims discount work?
Most markets accrue a discount for each consecutive claim-free year — up to 60% in Hong Kong, 50% in Singapore, 55% in Malaysia. A claim resets the discount.
Anything special for EVs?
Battery and drive-unit coverage, the repair network, and whether the sum insured is based on the pre-subsidy price all materially change both premium and claims payout.
