Why the mid-market rate is not your bank rate
The mid-market rate is the wholesale rate banks trade at with each other. The rate you are offered sits either side of it, and that spread is how the bank covers cost and margin. The smaller the amount, the larger the spread tends to be in percentage terms.
What to actually compare when converting
Do not compare headline numbers. Compare the amount that lands in the account: fees, spread, and any flat charge, all converted into one figure. That is your real cost.
When to convert
Short-term currency moves are close to unpredictable. For small, necessary amounts, splitting conversions over time beats a single bet. For large amounts, the timing of central bank meetings matters more than any forecast.
FAQ
How fresh are the rates?
The page fetches the latest mid-market rates on load and caches them for one hour. If the feed is unavailable, a recent built-in snapshot is shown with its date.
Is this a buy or sell rate?
Neither. It is the mid-market rate. A bank's buy rate is slightly lower and its sell rate slightly higher.
Which currencies are supported?
CNY, HKD, SGD, MYR, USD, VND and JPY are covered, plus other major currencies available from the feed.
Why are VND and JPY numbers so large?
Because those units are small in value — one US dollar is roughly 25,800 VND or 157 JPY. The conversion is still one-for-one on the unit.
