Board rates versus promotional rates

A board rate is the standing offer. A promotional rate usually demands fresh funds, a specific channel, or a short window. When you see a fixed deposit above 3%, check the minimum, the conditions, and what the balance rolls into when the promotion ends.

How much compounding frequency matters

At the same nominal rate, monthly compounding beats annual by a little — usually a few basis points. Shopping for 0.3 percentage points more rate matters far more than the compounding convention.

Inflation and tax still apply

Real purchasing power grows at the nominal rate minus inflation. In some markets interest is taxed or added to taxable income, so what you keep is below the figure on this page.

FAQ

How is interest calculated?

Using your chosen compounding: maturity = principal × (1 + rate ÷ n)^(n × years), where n is the number of compounding periods per year.

Are deposits protected?

Most markets run a deposit insurance scheme with different caps — RM250,000 under PIDM in Malaysia, USD250,000 under FDIC in the US. Amounts above the cap are not protected.

What if I withdraw early?

Interest is usually recalculated at the demand rate, and already-paid interest may be clawed back. Only lock money you will not need.

Why bother with an effective yield?

The same headline rate with different compounding, tax and thresholds produces clearly different outcomes. Entering your actual conditions here is more reliable than comparing headline numbers.
